FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
How do I Get Started?
Call 217-899-3677 or email us to schedule your FREE introductory class or a class viewing. The FREE intro class is followed by a quick consultation where we are able to determine what you are looking for, which program might best suit you, and we will answer any questions that you may have.
What do I wear to my FREE Introductory class?
All you need to wear is shorts or windpants and a t-shirt for your first intro class. When you come in we will go over the equipment you will need for each class.
How much do classes cost?
We have many different packages depending on how often you would like to train and what classes/programs you would like to take part in. When you come in for your free intro class we will give you a price list and breakdown of all the packages that we offer at Cunningham’s Ugottawanna Martial Arts and Family Fitness Center.
Is everything included in my tuition? I have friends at other schools that have to pay for belt tests, contract fees, lots of extra equipment, clubs, “special classes”, etc…
Yes. Everything is included in our unbelievably affordable regular tuition. We don’t believe in test fees (you’re earning it, not buying it), contracts (trust and excellent service is our contract), or special clubs or classes (ALL of our members get access to EVERYTHING. Nobody is more “exclusive” because they can pay us more).
Do I have to be in shape to start classes?
Absolutely not. One of the main reasons we see some students begin their training with us is to get in shape and feel better. Come in and begin training no matter what your fitness level is. We are here to help you reach your fitness goals.
What makes AFFKbJ different from other martial arts?
The American Freedom Form Kenbo Jitsu Hybrid Mixed Martial Arts System was founded to be completely different from virtually any style/system that you may have studied or read about. To truly get an understanding of what makes AFFKbJ revolutionary in the world of Personal Protection/Martial Arts/Character Development please check out our “History of AFFKbJ” page.
Is this style for me?
That’s the beauty of it… AFFKbJ is not a style, it’s a system. The system is designed to be effective for literally anybody who utilizes it. We do not attempt to make the student fit a style, our system will fit you! (Again, please visit our “History of AFFKbJ” page as well as others on our site for greater depth and detail)
How long does it take to earn a Black Belt at Cunningham's Ugottawanna M.A.?
Typically, it takes anywhere from 4-6 years for an adult student to earn their first degree black belt in the AFFKbJ system. The time-frame for Juniors varies too much to attempt an average, it may be beneficial to know, however, we do not promote in an effort to retain students and you will never see any 6-10 year olds wearing one of our black belts. Some schools promote students to black after 2-3 years because they believe “it is just the beginning”… and while we whole-heartedly agree that black belt is a beginning, we feel that it is a NEW beginning and consciously demand a higher level of proficiency, attitude and understanding of those wearing an AFFKbJ black belt. While some schools boast how many black belts they have, we take pride in how elite our group of black belts is.
Is the Mixed Martial Arts training safe?
At Cunningham’s Ugottawanna Martial Arts safety is paramount. Accidents can happen, as in any other sport or physical activity, but we pay close attention to safety and take extra precautions so that training can be realistic but safe and enjoyable too.
We are trying to decide to sign my son up for soccer or martial arts but we’re not sure we’d have time for both… what’s your advice?
Whether its soccer, football, baseball, basketball, softball, whatever it may be… none of these activities comes close to offering the life changing skills, traits and benefits of our martial arts program. But secondly, they do not have to be mutually exclusive. It is possible to play every sport you’d want to play while simultaneously steadily progressing as a Ugottawanna Warrior. In addition to its nearly countless other benefits, Martial Arts training has also been scientifically proven to wildly increase success in other sports.
